Resident Evil 3

Introduction

Two games down, a gazillion more to go. I have had a great adventure so far and my Resident Evil marathon is proving to be an exhilarating experience. So far, this game is officially my favourite of the ones I have played. I particularly enjoyed its parallel connection to the previous entry, which deepened its lore.

Story

Jill is in the centre of Raccoon City carrying out a certain investigation into the truth of the T-Virus and the Umbrella corporation. However, she suddenly receives a phone call from a colleague asking her to immediately leave the city as soon as possible. Her escape is interrupted by an large imposing figure who is literally capable of bashing through solid walls and is extremely determined in annihilating its target. He is referred to as “Nemesis”. Jill has to carry on with her investigation, outmanoeuvre Nemesis and escape the city.

Characters

There are a couple of central characters. They are as follows:

  • Jill Valentine (Nicole Tompkins) — She is determined to uncover the truth of the T-Virus and the Umbrella Corporation.
  • Carlos Oleveira (Jeff Schine) — A member of Umbrella’s military division. He volunteers to assist Jill in her quest.
  • Nicholai Ginovae (Neil Newbon) — Another member of Umbrella’s military division. He appears to have sinister motivations…
  • Nemesis — A pathological-bioweapon-of-an-individual who is fixated in terminating Jill.

Worldbuilding

The environment was quite similar to the previous Resident Evil entry. This is primarily because of the games are set in the same location. As you play the game, it becomes evident that the sequences of events of Resident Evil 2 & 3 are happening concurrently. Resident Evil 2 primarily took place in a police station and its surrounding environment, whilst Resident Evil 3 allows the player to explore more location, allowing you to feel the freedom which I felt was absent from the previous two entries.

Gameplay

This game, out from the first three games I have played, has the best gameplay by far. It felt a lot more streamlined. I was actually able to physically dodge in this game, something which the previous games lacked. For most of the story, you play as Jill. In some sequences, I played as Carlos. The gameplay difference is apparent: Jill is more reliant on stealth and ammo conservation in order to survive, whilst Carlos is more about killing who you have to do, especially with his exclusive assault rifle. Jill can dodge sideways to avoid a zombie grab, whereas Carlos can directly forward-dash, temporarily concussing the target. Overall, this game felt the most free.

Critique

This was an enjoyable experience. I enjoyed every moment of the game. The only stressing moments were when I had to fight Nemesis. The game had a great story to it and a decent blend between its action and horror elements. This is a game which I would definitely consider replaying at some point in the future, especially with the collectables I can use on my second playthrough. I only wished it lasted longer. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this game to others with an interest in the zombie genre.

Afterwords

The previous entry was a high-bar and this game was arguably my favourite. I enjoyed every aspect of it. This is one game I would definitely recommend to fans of horror, action and zombie thrillers.
