Netflix’s Resident Evil — Pilot Episode Structure

Netflix is currently developing a live-action TV show based on the famous video game franchise ‘Resident Evil’, which ironically I am in the middle of playing right now. The following Medium page will be reveal the contents of the pilot episode in its fifth draft of the script. This might not reflect the final product. Without further ado:

Script Analysis

1 — Introduction

A voiceover with Billie, who explains how the scientists predicted the world would end in 2036.
It is revealed to be the year 2036.
A 30 year old female ‘Jade’ and 40 year old male ‘Arjun’ show up.
Arjun convinces Jade to not be constantly travelling outdoors whilst she is applying perfume to herself.
She decides to travel outside to continue her research alongside her rabbit.

2 — Outside

Jade travels to a crumbled and desolated Buckingham Palace.
She stops at the centre of the park and unpacks the equipment — Phone, Camera, Rabbit Cage.
She pricks the rabbit’s ear, which leads to a noticeable blood drops. She lets go and the Rabbit starts to run away.
A Zero (zombie) appears out of nowhere and chases after the rabbit, followed by additional Zeroes.
She talks into her phone to mark her 81st day of observation. She can not identify any signs of a leadership structure.
The rabbit is almost about to get captured, but it just about escapes into the distance.
Jade turns around and she accidentally slips onto a rock, creating noticeable blood drops.
Zeroes target onto Jade and charge. She runs as fast as she can up a hill and to a perimeter. She eventually gets slammed to the ground by a Zero, but gets kicked off.
A wall of flame suddenly surrounds the perimeter, burning the Zeroes alive.
Jade pulls out her tablet which displays the presence of a seismic alert as the ground shakes and a giant caterpillar knocks Jade to the ground.
Cut to black.

3 — Car Ride

Episode goes backward to 2022.
Story focuses on 14 year old Sisters: Jade & Billie, alongside their father Albert. They are twins, but don’t lookalike. They also have a dog called Pablo.
They are driving in a car. They pass a sign which states “Raccoon Two — An Umbrella Community”.
“Three Months Before The End” Title.
They see three males playing basketball.
They park in front of a fancy house.

4 — House

Sisters were reluctant to move to here.
The family is greeted by a female “Carol”. Albert appears to already know her. The four of them have a discussion and she gives a history of the place, such as it being a former factory town.
Carol surprise them with a surprise cake in the kitchen.
Sisters end up alone together, talking about reluctance. Billie then finds a random caterpillar on the nearby plant.

5 — Caterpillar Face Off

Back to the future to 2036.
Giant caterpillar attempts to bash Jade as she rolls around. It crashes her onto a nearby tree, who gets knocked out.
An outside Gunfire rips the creature and eventually tears it apart, until it drops dead.
Three people show up: Tate, Yen and Maskey.
They came across Jade’s unconscious body. They notice the “R002” tattoo on her chest, with Yen describing her as a ‘survivor’.

6 — Blood Extraction

Back to 2022.
Albert, Billie and Albert are eating around the table.
There is a tension. Jade is a rebellious child and she leaves the room.
Albert is extracting blood from Billie. Jade later arrives holding a vial of blood.

7 — Night Time

Billie and Jade carry on with conversations in their bedroom.
Jade talks about how its pointless to extract regular blood samples because they have ‘never been sick’.
They assure each other.

8 —Transfusion

Albert goes towards his lab.
He checks Jade’s blood under a microscope, jotting down notes.
He then takes her blood and injects it into his OWN neck.

9 — Highschool

Billie enters the crowded lunch room to see Jade eating by herself. She tries to sit next to hear, but it suddenly becomes occupied by the basketball males they saw earlier (@3 — Car Ride).
Billie sits by herself until a female ‘Tammy’ gives her company. Jade shouts to grab Billie’s attention, but ignores her. Jade explains to Tammy that she is her twin sister.
Tammy gets confused because they don’t look alike. Jade explains how they have the same father, but the mother had different egg donors. Tammy describes her as a ‘freak’.
They have a conversation, but Tammy becomes increasingly assertive. They then fight. Jade defends her as Tammy throws punches. The principal pulls Tammy off and stops the fight.
Jade shows up afterwards.

10 — Wesker’s House

Albert and three others are watching a commercial.
Albert cuts off the woman and it shows he’s clearly in charge.
Jade barges into the house as Billie keeps on walking.
Jade shouts at him. He suddenly does not feel in charge anymore.
Albert explains he was on a call. She then grabs and shatters the tablet against the wall.

11 — Billie’s Room @ Night.

Billie slams the door as she enters and then becomes tearful as she holds Paolo the Dog.
She leaves the room and sees Jade, who then sees father. He tries to start a conversation, but gets shut down.
Billies mentions a video being posted. Jade asks why she didn’t sit next to her. She asks Billie to become more assertive herself.

12 — Awake

Back to the future in 2036.
Jade becomes conscious and finds herself on a unfamiliar medical bed dressed in hospital gown.
She looks at a virtual globe which shows Umbrella occupying the west coast of America, whereas something called “Fortress Scandinavia” covers Norway, Sweden and Finland. Among other countries and organisations.
Tate shows up who tells her she’s currently in Brighton, with the Brighton Freehold. Jade does not thank his/her efforts and simply asks for her cloths and Tate promptly directs her.
Tate talks about how the ribs will take a while to heal as she changes her clothing. She says she wants to leave now, but Tate claims it’s not possible until tomorrow.
We see men and women working and sort out appliances with Jade taking it all in. They are essentially scavengers.
Tate activates the light to the perimeter. Jade realises why she can’t leave on foot. She sees an ocean of Zeroes surrounding the place.

13 — Back to School.

Back to 2022.
Billie is gliding on an electric scooter with Jade behind her. They across Tammy under a tree.
Billie walks up to Tammy, expecting a confrontation. Instead, Billie decides to start apologising. But Tammy just shoves the burrito onto her face.
Later, somebody dressed inside a Raccoon mascot assaults Tammy after kicking the bathroom stall open. Racoon hits Tammy with a rock.
Billie is then called out of her classroom. The teacher tells her to open her locker, only for her to find the Raccoon’s head.
Later, Dave Isaacs, father of Tammy, yells at the teacher. Albert walks in shortly thereafter.
Albert talks to Dave in a menacing way. It is clear he has power over him. He weakens Dave and forces Tammy to apologise to Billie.
Billie and Albert walk out of the office with Jade outside. She walks past her sister because she knows she was the one who attacked Tammy.

14 — Exposition & Treason

Back to the future.
Jade and Tate have discussions on the Zeros and their physiology.
Jade mentions there’s only 300 million humans left alive on the planet.
She appears to feel guilty about the pandemic.
Jade and Tate feel a moment of spark.
Yen arrives to explain that UMBRELLA is on the way.
Jade realises she was being set up and Umbrella is on their way to collect her as part of a bounty.
She attempts to resist, but to no avail.

15 — Umbrella HQ

Flash to the past.
Billie walks on a hill and witnesses a steel-glass building. Umbrella’s headquarters.
She is then seen through a black and white security camera as she approaches the building. She says her name and the system allows her inside.
She sees offices with glass walls and a conference room with a holographic display of a cartoon bear.

16 — Experimentation

A black-white recording of guards firing at something unknown in the distance. Screaming can be heard.
Albert reviews the footage and makes sure it stays hidden from the public. It does not appear to be the first time either.
He is notified of his daughter’s arrival by Rhonda, his assistant. He smiles at her from the office. She smiles back.
A man (Carl) is pushing a cart around. He stops to talk with Rhonda. Billie inspects the cart to discover rabbits inside. He then proceeds with the cart to the elevator, towards level “B4”.
Albert jerks Billie. They then proceed to the cafeteria.

17 — Night.

Billie is on her bed inside her house.
She searches “Animals Testing” on the tablet and sees the familiar cage of caged rabbits.
She then searches “Umbrella animal testing”, only to discover “Umbrella Wins PETA Award and “Umbrella Vows No Animal Testing”, which confuses her.
Jade arrives and speaks to Billie about the school testing. She tries to apologise, but Billie doesn’t take her seriously. At least she is not likely to be bullied now.
She explains the Animal Testing situation with Jade. Billie wants to expose the situation. She steals Albert’s ID and Cellphone whilst he’s asleep.
After also stealing LED hand flashlights, they proceed towards the Umbrella headquarters. They flashed the light towards the camera to avoid facial recognition.
Using the automated entry point, she plays Albert’s voice to enter the facility.
Billie and Jade enter the elevator and head towards “B4”. However, a message plays which says that security is en-route due to the activation of pressure sensors.

18 — Arrival

Back to the future.
A group of Umbrella helicopters arrive.
Jade warns Tate that he will not get what we wants.
Umbrella Troops, such as Richard Baxter, flood out of the helicopters. After Tate shows him where Jade is, the soldier shoots him in the head.
The rest of the Umbrella Troops open fire, massacring the scavengers.

19 — Investigation

Flash to the past.
Elevator Doors open.
Jade and Billie heads towards the lab, where they see cages full of animals. Billie then snaps pictures.
Billie tries to tweet out the images, but there is no connection. They log in from Albert’s computer instead.
She comes across an after action report in relation to 1998s Raccoon City incident after a 10 megaton device was detonated.
They then hear the sirens from the outside. Jade wants to go, but Billie wants to take more pictures.
Suddenly, the animal cages are unlocked. It’s a mayhem.
Billie opens a cage. It was initially dark. Then, a zombie dog lunges at Billie, which crashes her and Jade to the floor.
Jade and Billie run towards the elevator as the dog chases after them. Jade a pushes a table over it to slow it down.
At the last moment, Jade and Billie are in the elevator and the door shuts just in time.
They then leave the elevator. They suddenly hear a crashing against the staircase door. It then slams open and the dog appears. The two sisters run.

20 — Umbrella Showdown

Back to the future.
Richard Baxter eats a candy during the pursuit of Jade.
After being cornered, Jade witnesses the scavengers being gunned down by Umbrella troops.

21 — Chase

Flash to the past.
Jade and Billie hit a dead end. The dog is behind them, trying to sniff them out.
They’re hiding underneath a conference table. The dog then leaves, but Jade accidentally elbows a console, which replays the holographic cartoon bear.
The dog hears the commotion and ends running back into the area. He later spots Jade and attempts to bite her.
The two sisters run towards the front door. It is locked. They see Umbrella security outside, but they can’t see the girls trapped inside.
As Billie plays Albert’s voice recording to open the door, the dog slams through the glass wall and crashes into Billie. It starts to BITE and tear her. It becomes bloody.
Jade grabs a fire extinguisher she saw on the way and smacks the dogs head, killing it.
She tries to call Billie, but she’s DEAD.

22 — Foreshadowing

Back to the future.
Jade and Richard Baxter make an exchange. He arrives with two troopers behind him.
He claims his sister is looking for her, which sends shiver down her spine.
As the soldiers approach, Jade jumps off the building. Richard runs for her to try and grab her. But fails.
Jade is seen falling down to the swarm of Zeroes. The episode cuts with her in mid-air.
